Rams predicted to bolster defense by signing Jets $17 million castoff in free agency image

C.J. Mosley’s six-year tenure with the New York Jets ended earlier this offseason after the team released the veteran in a cost-cutting measure.

Now, Mosley will look to find the third NFL team of his career. The veteran will be looking to bounce back after playing in just four games due to toe and neck injuries.

For teams looking for an off-ball linebacker in free agency, Mosley may be the best option available. Cory Woodroof of For The Win recently predicted landing spots for the top remaining free agents, and Woodroof has Mosley heading west to play for the Los Angeles Rams.

Regarding Mosley’s potential fit with the Rams, Woodroof offered the following:

Mosley is the kind of veteran leader in the middle of the defense who could help a Rams team trying to contend for a championship. He could immediately slot in next to Omar Speights at linebacker.

As Woodroof mentioned, Mosley could immediately slide in at inside linebacker next to Omar Speights. That spot was previously held by Christian Rozeboom, who left to sign with the Carolina Panthers in free agency.

Rozeboom led the Rams in tackles with 135 in 2024, so replacing that production will be key. Mosley is a tackling machine who was at one point considered to be among the game’s best inside linebackers.

While Mosley isn’t as elite as he once was, the linebacker is still capable of being an above-average starter. Before going down with an injury in 2024, Pro Football Focus gave Mosley a 74.7 overall grade.

Mosley played all 17 games in 2023, however, and filled up the stat sheet. The veteran racked up 152 tackles, five tackles for loss, seven pass deflections, and one interception during that campaign.

Overall, Mosley has earned five Pro Bowl berths and five second-team All-Pro selections during his 10-year career that includes five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and five seasons with the Jets.

Before being cut, Mosley was due to carry a cap hit of $12.7 million in 2025. Over the Cap has the Rams sitting at around $30 million in cap space, so adding a veteran like Mosley is doable.

If the Rams sign Mosley, the team wouldn’t have to worry about finding another starter at linebacker during the draft. 2024 undrafted free agent Elias Fields and Tony Fields II are the only other linebackers currently on the Rams’ roster.
