This breathtaking video captures a courageous mongoose taking on a large black mamba snake. A little dwarf mongoose was seen in the Kruger National Park protecting its burrow from one of Africa’s most ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs snakes.
A certified safari guide named Brett Horely recounted his sʜᴏᴄᴋ at witnessing the courageous little mammal defending its home. According to Mr. Horely, it was a hot summer afternoon and there wasn’t much going on. As they reached a bend, their tracker Duncan spotted a black mamba creeping across the undergrowth. No one immediately understood that a dwarf mongoose was trailing the black mamba because of its length.
The black mamba, the longest ᴠᴇɴᴏᴍᴏᴜs snake in Africa, can reach lengths of up to 14 feet. They are also among the fastest snakes in the world, capable of moving at speeds of up to 12.5 mph. When ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴛened, they have a reputation for being incredibly aggressive, striking frequently and injecting a sizable amount of venom with each strike. They are extremely ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴᴏᴜs as well.
Mr. Horely was grateful for the opportunity to see such a rare meeting and expressed ᴀᴡᴇ at the mongooses’ ability to repel the snake. In his 14 years as a safari guide, he claimed that he had never witnessed anything comparable. The courageous little mongoose was simply amazing. In order to escape the mongoose, the snake eventually found a tree and climbed all the way to the top.
